Business travel in Québec: the receipt your accountant needs
To claim the GST and QST back on a ride, a business needs a receipt with the supplier's name, the date and the total. From $100 it must also show the supplier's GST and QST registration numbers and the tax amounts, and from $500 the buyer's name, payment terms and a description of the service. These are the current thresholds (changed in 2021); older guides still quote $30 and $150.

What the receipt must show (GST/HST and QST)
- Under $100 (taxes included): supplier's name or business name, invoice date, total amount. For the QST, also the tax amount and a description. Revenu Québec · CRA
- $100 to $499.99: all of the above, plus the supplier's GST and QST registration numbers and the GST and QST amounts. Revenu Québec
- $500 or more: all of the above, plus the buyer's name (or business or agent), the terms of payment and a description of the service. Revenu Québec
- Keep receipts and records for 6 years after the end of the year they relate to. Revenu Québec
Why it matters for car services
- An airport-and-meetings day often passes $100, sometimes $500: the receipt then needs the registration numbers, or the tax credit can be refused.
- Ask for the invoice in the company's name if the company pays.
- A monthly invoice for all rides keeps one document per month instead of a pile of slips.
