Travelling with young children from Montréal airport: car seats
In Québec, a child under 9 years old or under 145 cm must ride in a car seat or booster suited to their size. Taxis at Montréal-Trudeau don't supply car seats, and the law makes an exception for taxis: a child who can sit upright uses the seat belt, and a child too small to sit up is held by a buckled adult. Safety bodies still strongly recommend a proper seat, so bring yours or book a car with one.

What the law says
- Under 9 years or under 145 cm: an approved car seat or booster adapted to the child's height and weight, whichever limit comes first. Protecteur du citoyen · SPVM
- 12 and under: in the back seat. Protecteur du citoyen
- The taxi exception: taxis don't offer baby seats. In a taxi, a child who can sit upright must wear the seat belt; a child too small to sit up is held by an adult who has buckled their own belt first. ADM
- Fine for the driver when a required seat is missing outside that exception: $80–$100 and 3 demerit points (Québec government, 2019 rule change).
Which seat for which child
- Infant seat: birth to about 10 kg (22 lb), rear-facing.
- Rear-facing is recommended until at least age 2 or the seat's limit.
- Child seat: about 10 kg to 29.5 kg (65 lb).
- Booster: from 18 kg (40 lb) until 145 cm or 9 years. INSPQ
Your options from YUL
- Bring your own seat: most airlines check car seats; you install it in the taxi or car (allow a few minutes).
- Taxi without a seat: legal under the taxi exception, but not what safety experts recommend for small children.
- Uber: Uber's car-seat option isn't offered in Montréal (its help page lists 8 US cities only).
- Pre-booked car: say the children's ages and weights when you book and ask whether a seat can be provided, or plan to install yours. Tell the company how many seats, so the right size vehicle comes.
